Discipline (Part II)

1 Corinthians 9:23-27 (main passage)

25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.

So how do we have discipline?  Paul says we need to train, in fact go into "strict training", or really he means to develop self control.  But who doesn't struggle with that?  Have you ever made a new years resolution and actually kept it?  Made plans to eat healthy in the new year, and then comes Valentines day.  The chocolate is flowing ... M&M's abound, little heart shaped candies calling out your name ... and self control is out the window, right?  Chocolate is my downfall, that, and fresh baked Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies - c'mon somebody!  Fighting a craving right now ~

Pastor Randy shared this statement with us: "Self control is only possible through spirit control."

In our own strength, we are doomed to fail.  We may be able to fake it for a time, but eventually, we will give in to our flesh.  Unless ... unless we are "spirit" controlled.  My favorite verse is Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  Through Christ, through the Holy Spirit living inside of me, I can do all things.  I can overcome sin and temptation - but only through Christ.

The first step to having "self-control" is having "spirit-control."  Who is in control of your life right now?  Is it you?  Or are you seeking God's direction, through the Holy Spirit?  The cool thing is, if you have been doing it on your own, and realize it's time to put God in the right place - He is only a prayer away.

James 4:8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.
